Monthly Competition Guidelines

At the beginning of the meeting, place your slides and prints in the appropriate categories on the front table.

There will be 3 categories for 2007.

  1. Traditional Image - prints and slides any subject matter. For digital images normal processing is allowed. No elements may be added, or deleted. Dust spots may be cleaned up (just as could be done in a wet darkroom). Any technique that results in the same effect as used by film cameras is allowed. Only one image is created - no multiple exposures, overlays, or composites.
  2. Enhanced Image - prints and slides any subject matter. Enhanced images include both creative film and digital editing techniques used to create images that are a departure from reality as well as realistic looking images that have had elements added or removed, new skies put in, etc..
  3. Topic of the Month - prints and slides. The subject matter is the specified topic, but may be interpreted using film, or digital, and may be presented as traditional or altered as the maker sees fit.

In each of the three categories there is no distinction between images captured using film or digitally, nor between presentation as a print or as a slide. Neither is there a distinction between Black & White and Color. Images are judged on their merits and given a score. Roughly 20% of the top scoring images will be given an Award or an Honorable Mention (HM). Images that score a 5/5 will receive an Award designation. The titles of the Awards/HMs with the names of the makers are announced at the end of the meeting, and the maker of each image will describe how the image was made or any salient features of the image.

Members may show a total of four entries in the Monthly Competition. A maximum of two Special Topic entries are allowed and the other entries can be distributed as wished in the remaining categories: Traditional Image and Enhanced Image.

Slide specifications: To identify the correct horizontal and vertical orientation, put a LARGE dot in the lower left hand corner of the slide. This aids the projectionist in loading the slide trays.  Put your name at the bottom of the slide and the name of the picture at the top of the slide.

Print specifications: 26 inches is the tallest object that will fit in the lightbox. Glass and frames are discouraged. Please place name and title on back of mounted print. Minimum print size - 8" x 10".

December Annual Competition Guidelines

Guidelines--> Members may bring up to six slides and three prints for competition. Slides may be distributed among the various categories in any desired ratio. Winning slides or prints from previous years are not allowed, nor are images that are similar (the same location or the same shoot) to former winning entries. Entry definitions:

    • Color Pictorial - any subject allowed
    • Creative - a departure from reality such as manipulation by zoom, motion, multiple exposure, black light, rippled glass or computer.
    • Photojournalism - a photographic presentation of 'news story', as conceived of as the achieving of maximum narrative significance in a photograph.
    • Photo Travel - captures a feeling of a time or place and portrays a land, people, or a culture.
    • Nature - nature only, domestic plants and animals excluded; the hand of man must not be seen.
    • Prints - Any subject, color or black and white, mounted, minimum size 8x10.
